4-year PhD Studentship Epsrc Centre for PhD Training in Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing

The University of Nottingham is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a PhD position in materials engineering. The initial contract for this position is 4 years. Applications should be sent before January 10, 2019.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship (4 years) within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Additive Manufacturing in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham. http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/additivemanufacturing/.

We seek to use 3D printing to find ways of supporting enzymes for the catalysis of biochemical reactions. 3D printing offers particular benefits in this regard - its high geometrical freedom will allow us to create complex 3D systems with high surface area and maximal residence time for the reactants / enzymes. In particular, multimaterial ink jet printing will enable us to fix the enzymes within the supporting structures in precisely the location needed. This could enable a better design of chemo-enzymatic cascade reactions, by spatially separating the different catalysts to increase their stability. In addition, ability to quickly generate new designs will allow us to iterate quickly to find the optimal structure for high yield and efficiency. The project will focus on identify suitable 'inks' that will allow enzymes to be incorporated into a fluid and then deposited and fixed into a 3D structure amenable for biochemical processing. We will then show how the design of such systems can be modified on demand to meet the needs of different applications.

Due to funding restrictions, the position is only available for UK and EU candidates

- Candidates must possess or expect to obtain, a 2:1 or first class degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences related discipline. Applicants with Mechanical and Materials Engineering background are strongly encouraged to apply.

- Candidates will be available to start on 1st February 2019.

Please send a copy of your covering letter, CV and academic transcripts to amcdt@nottingham.ac.uk referring to the project title.
