Two Postdoctoral Positions in Microresonator Frequency Combs

A new opening postdoctoral position in semiconductors is available at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for 2 years in Sweden. Candidates are welcome before November 30, 2018.

The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academia, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and PhD students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with the latest equipment.

Information about the project

An optical frequency comb is a laser source whose spectrum is made of evenly spaced and narrow frequency lines that maintain broadband phase coherence across the bandwidth. Microresonator frequency combs constitute an alternative platform to femtosecond mode-locked lasers for realizing frequency combs on a chip-scale platform. Their compactness, compatibility with standard semiconductor fabrication techniques and large (> 10 GHz) line spacing enable new opportunities in frequency synthesis and metrology: from advanced communications to radio-frequency photonics.

The overall aim of the project is to investigate the potential of a new class of coherent microresonator frequency combs, namely dark optical solitons (or dark pulse Kerr combs), in advanced optical communication systems. The project is funded by the European Research Council.

- Position 1: Numerical and physical modeling of dark solitons in optical microresonators

- Position 2: Experimental analysis and characterization of dark solitons in microresonators

The Photonics laboratory at the Microtechnology and Nanoscience Department (MC2) is a dynamic and creative group with about 30 members working in an international and collaborative atmosphere. We perform both curiosity-driven and applied-research in the areas of optoelectronics, nanophotonics, and fiber optic systems. We enjoy a state-of-the-art laboratory for ultrafast optical science and have access to in-house cleanroom facilities to manufacture our own nanophotonic structures.

Major responsibilities

As postdoctoral fellow, your main responsibilities are to lead and conduct research, and guide junior PhD students. You will have the freedom to contribute with your ideas, and the support from an outstanding team of more senior researchers and professors.

The postdoctoral position is a full-time employment position limited to 2 years. We offer a competitive salary, excellent working conditions and access to world-class facilities and infrastructure. Starting date is negotiable.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications

You should have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar. You must have experience with supervision of junior students (PhD or Master).

For position #1, it is expected that you will have solid knowledge of computational techniques in nonlinear optics (generalized nonlinear Schrdinger equation, Lugiato-Lefever equation, etc.), demonstrated by a handful of relevant scientific publications in the field.

For position #2, you must have solid experience with ultrafast laser systems (mode-locked lasers, fiber laser frequency combs, pulse characterization techniques, etc.), ideally with microresonator frequency combs. Knowledge of standard finite element solvers is a plus for both positions.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
