Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Intelligent Electrical Power Grids

Delft University of Technology, Netherlands is inviting applicants to apply for a professor position in applied mathematics. This position is available for six years in the first instance. This position is open until filled.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the social relevance of its research programmes. The faculty's excellent facilities accentuate its international position in teaching and research. Within this interdisciplinary and international setting the faculty employs more than 1100 employees, including about 400 graduate students and about 2100 students. Together they work on a broad range of technical innovations in the fields of sustainable energy, telecommunications, microelectronics, embedded systems, computer and software engineering, interactive multimedia and applied mathematics.

Research in the Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy is inspired by the technical, scientific and societal challenges originating from the transition towards a more sustainable society.

The Electrical Sustainable Energy Department provides expertise in each of these areas throughout the entire energy system chain. The Intelligent Electrical Power Grid (IEPG) group works on the future of our power system. The goal is to generate, transmit and use electrical energy in a highly reliable, efficient, stable, clean, and safe way. IEPG integrates new power technologies and smart controls, which interact with other systems and allow for more distributed and variable generation.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our faculty. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status or disability status. Because of our diversity values we do particularly support women to apply.

Within the IEPG group, there is a vacancy for an assistant professor (Tenure Track).

The electricity system is undergoing a digital transformation and becoming more dependent on the cyber-infrastructure and intelligent algorithms to support its operation. The resilience of such cyber-physical energy system to man-made threats, such as cyber-attacks, and natural risks is of paramount importance. Thus, new methods for assessing and insuring resilience of our future energy systems, both in the physical and the cyber range are needed, including aspects such as impact and vulnerability quantification, stability margin estimation, intrusion detection, recovery planning, incident response methods, modeling of complex system-of-system dependencies, robust model-based operations, etc. The methods could combine analytical, numerical and experimental principles.

The research duties are to lead new research efforts in resilience of cyber-physical energy systems, including resilience assessment and improvement. The work will include close collaboration with other members of DeSIRE program as well as applying for additional funding. Research will be conducted in collaboration with PhD students.

This position is embedded in the 'Designing Systems for Informed Resilience Engineering' (DeSIRE) program, an extensive capacity building program, set-up by the 4TU Centre Resilience Engineering [www.4tu.nl/resilience]. Within this program of the 4 technical universities of the Netherlands, 16 new tenure track positions have been created at 13 faculties across the 4TU. This ambitious 4TU umbrella program on resilience aims to conduct excellent research of societal value and set-up and contribute to educational programs in the emerging field of Resilience Engineering. You will be working in a team of top scientists within 4TU, benefiting from the opportunity to work on concrete resilience challenges within our broad network of partners in policy and practice. We foster interdisciplinary collaboration between the 16 tenure trackers, associated scientific staff and public and private partners. All 16 Tenure Trackers will be actively involved in the scientific, educational and valorization activities of the DeSIRE program and the 4TU-Centre Resilience Engineering. It offers prospective candidates excellent opportunities to extend their networks with academic and societal partners.

The candidate must have an excellent command of English language. Knowledge of, or willingness to learn Dutch is an advantage.

The applicant is expected to have good teaching and presentation skills (didactic qualities), and to develop and pursue an ambitious research programme.

At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
