Research Assistant in Development of Low Cost Industrial Automation Systems

University of Cambridge, UK is inviting applicants to apply for a postdoctoral scholar position in computer science. The funding allows successful candidates to work for 18 months in the first instance. Applications are invited up to November 01, 2018.

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Distributed Information and Automation Laboratory to work on supply chain automation.

The focus of the project is to develop low cost solution approaches for automation of factory operations, using a combination of modelling, IoT based and data-driven techniques. The post-holder will help develop automation system prototypes which can demonstrate the ability to make low cost solutions that can be adopted by SME companies. The project aims to extend these prototypes into applications or methods to be used within actual operations within industry, as well as measure and evaluate the effectiveness of these in a real environment.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are a PhD (or close to obtaining) in Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline, and research experience in the following areas:

The candidate should have the ability to liaise confidently with industrial professionals on conference calls and in face-to-face meetings, and will be expected to produce academic publications from the work. The candidate should also have an interest in taking research outputs beyond demonstration systems to working applications/methods for use in industry.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.
