Postgraduate Research Scholarship in the Philosophy of Biomedicine

An opportunity is available for an outstanding PhD scholar to conduct research in philosophy of medicine for the 21st Century. The research is to be conducted in the Theory and Methods in Biosciences research group at the Charles Perkins Centre. This Scholarship is supported by a grant from ARC Australian Laureate Fellowship.

a. This Scholarship is offered subject to applicants having an unconditional offer of admission or currently being enrolled for full-time studies in a PhD at the University of Sydney within the I. Department of Philosophy, School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry, Faculty of Arts and Social Science, or II. School of History and Philosophy of Science, Faculty of Science.

b. Applicants must be willing to undertake research in philosophy of medicine for the 21st Century. c. Applicants must also hold an Honours degree (First Class or Second Class upper) or a Master’s degree in at least one of the following areas: I. history and/or philosophy of science and be able to demonstrate interest and proficiency in biological and biomedical sciences, or II. biological or biomedical field and be able to demonstrate interest and proficiency in history and philosophy of science. a. The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the basis of: II. the collaboration of the applicant's research proposal and that of the Laureate project, and III. a personal statement which demonstrates their interest in: b. The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the nomination of the relevant research supervisor. The Scholarship will provide an annual stipend allowance of $26,300 per annum for up to four years, subject to satisfactory academic performance. No extensions are allowed. Academic course fees is also provided for a successful international applicant, for up to four years.
