Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Enabling Federated Learning in Mobile Edge Computing

Applications are invited for a PhD position in computing systems to join The University of Sydney, Australia. This position is available for three years. The deadline to apply is November 13, 2018.

An opportunity is available for an outstanding PhD scholar in the area of Enabling Federated Learning in Mobile Edge Computing.

This project will study an incentive mechanism assisting Federated learning to involve a number of participating mobile devices with local training data for improving the global model considering communication and computation efficiency of the Mobile Edge Computing system.

Applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission for full-time studies in a PhD within the School of Information Technologies at the University of Sydney, and be willing to undertake research in the field of Enabling Federated Learning in Mobile Edge Computing.

Applicants must also hold a Bachelor degree or a Master’s degree in Computer Science or Electronics Engineering in the field of Communications and Networks, Computing or Machine Learning.

Applicants must also demonstrate excellent mathematical background in optimization theory, machine learning, game theory, or queueing theory and/or good coding skills.

Preference will be given to applicants with research publications in IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer), CS conferences or any other relevant publication in the field of communication networks.

The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the nomination of the relevant research supervisor(s) in the School of Information Technologies, Faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of Sydney.

The Scholarship will provide an annual stipend allowance of $30,000 (fixed amount) for up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance. No extension is possible.

Academic course fees are also provided for a successful international applicant, for 12 research periods. No extension is possible.

Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the Scholarship, will be deducted from the maximum duration of the Scholarship excluding the potential extension period.

The Scholarship is for commencement in relevant research period in which it is offered for and cannot be deferred or transferred to another area of research.

No other amount is payable. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funding.

Progression is subject to passing the annual progress review.
