Postdoctoral Researcher Organic Chemistry Biochemistry Food Chemistry

The aim of the Department of Health Sciences and Technology is to create the foundations for sustaining and improving the quality of life for people into old age. The Laboratory of Food Biochemistry at the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health, ETH Zurich led by Prof. Laura Nystrm is looking for a new position.The research topics of the group deal with cereal dietary fibres and associated phytochemicals, their analysis from various cereal foods, chemical and enzymatic reactions in food and other biological systems, as well as optimizing or controlling reactions to ensure the health benefits associated to each component. The topic of the Postdoc position in this ERC funded project "BINDING FIBRES - Soluble dietary fibre: unravelling how weak bonds have a strong impact on function" is to study supramolecular binding mechanisms between soluble dietary fibres and nutritionally relevant small molecules using a variety of novel and established binding assessment techniques. Starting date of the position will be upon agreement.

We seek for a highly motivated scientist with good skills in biophysical organic chemistry and chemical analysis. The candidate must bring along solid experience in studying interactions of bio- and/or artificial molecules in the condensed phase by at least one state of the art or novel technique (SPR, thermophoresis, ITC, (nano-)ESI-MS, equilibrium dialysis, AFM, scattering techniques), in addition to the other standard analytical techniques (HPLC, various spectroscopies). Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the research topics, the applicants should be motivated to adapt new techniques quickly.

The successful applicant has excellent academic qualifications, good communication skills, and strong self-motivation. The candidate should also have a PhD in biochemistry, (physical-) organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, food chemistry, or a related subject, which includes the study of bindings/interactions. Regardless of background, the successful applicant will have an interactive and highly motivated personality, excellent English language skills, the ability to carry out research in an interdisciplinary and international environment, and a strong desire to disseminate the results in conference talks and journal articles.
