Postdoctoral Position in Theoretical Modelling of Relativistic Laser-matter Interaction

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden has an opening postdoctoral associate position in material sciences. This position is closed on November 22, 2018.

Department of Physics at Chalmers – home of the Graphene Flagship

Stimulated by major needs and challenges in science and a sustainable society, the ambition of the department of Physics is to foster a creative environment for academic research, learning and outreach.

We provide a competitive advantage by linking our top-level international and interdisciplinary academic performance in the areas of material science, nanotechnology and energy research with world-leading industrial R&D&I projects. We address a wide array of experimental, computational, methodological and theoretical challenges, from fundamental physics research, through the development of new materials such as graphene to direct industrial projects generating new inventions. We have a strong learning commitment on all levels from undergraduate to PhD studies where physics meet engineering.

The department is the major part of Gothenburg Physics Centre - a collaboration between four departments at Chalmers and Gothenburg University.

Information about the project

The Department of Physics seeks a highly motivated and talented individual to join the Plasma Theory group at the Division of Subatomic and Plasma Physics and work on theoretical modelling of laser-matter interaction. The position is funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant “Running away and radiating’‘, which is about understanding the characteristics and dynamics of particle acceleration in plasmas.

Major responsibilities

The postdoctoral project will be focused on theoretical modelling of laser-plasma based ion acceleration and radiation generation in plasma accelerators, mainly via numerical simulations and comparisons with experimental observations. The successful candidate is expected to interact closely with members of the Plasma Theory research group at Chalmers and with experimentalists at the Lund Laser Center.

Your major responsibility as a postdoc is to perform your research in a research group. The candidate will be employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited until 2020-09-30.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in physics or in a closely related field. Previous experience in theoretical modelling of relativistic laser-matter interaction with Particle-in-Cell codes, in particular modelling of laser-driven ion acceleration as well as radiation emitted by laser-plasma accelerated charged particles is considered as a strong advantage.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
