Postdoctoral Position in Modelling of Li-ion Batteries for Ageing and Thermal Analysis

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden is offering postdoctoral associate position in signal processing. This position is available for 2 years. All candidates regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply before November 26, 2018.

Information about the division, research group and department

The Division of Electric Power Engineering conducts research within a broad range of topics in electric power technology. Our purpose is to develop interdisciplinary research areas within the university as well as with external partners. Research activities at the division are focused on electrified vehicles, renewable energy generation and power system applications, including energy storages for grid applications. For the battery related research there is a tight cooperation with other academic and industrial partners in Sweden.

In the team working with Electromobility and renewable energy applications, we are about 30 persons, of which a bit more than half are PhD students about 10 seniors and postdocs, working in a dynamic and international work environment working with power electronics, drives and energy storage for renewables as well as for electrified vehicles.

At the department of Electrical Engineering research and education are performed in the areas of Communication and Antenna systems, Electric Power Engineering, Signal processing and Biomedical engineering, and Systems and Control. Our knowledge is of use everywhere where there is advanced technology with integrated electronics. We work with challenges for a sustainable future in society of today, for example in the growing demands concerning efficient systems for communications and electrification.

The department provides about 100 courses, of which most are included in the Master's Programs "Biomedical Engineering", "Electric Power Engineering", "Systems, Control and Mechatronics" and "Communication Engineering".


Job description

This position is a part of a larger cooperation between the battery group at the ngstrm laboratory in Uppsala, Royal institute of Technology in Stockholm, Volvo AB, Volvo Cars, Scania and Chalmers. The aim of this project is to study the performance and aging of next generation LIBs in vehicle applications. Specifically the following efforts are to be made: Characterization of dynamic performance and ageing of nickel-rich cathode materials by laboratory testing of commercial cells and material and electrochemical analysis of degraded battery cells, identification of structural degradation with in-operando techniques, measure pressure and temperature changes during cycling and correlate the thus obtained data with post-mortem analysis and modelling, to better understand the degradation processes.

The main task in the present position is to develop physics-based models that will serve as a tool for performance prediction, in particular loss predictions and temperature development as well as aging prediction. Accounting for mechanical effects is also an important part. Theoretical work is combined with experimental testing.

Major responsibilities

The main responsibility of the PostDoc is to conduct research on modelling of LiIon battery cells and to report these results in the form of models, reports, data sets, articles as well as meetings and symposiums.

Full-time temporary employment for 2 years.


To be qualified the applicant must have a Doctoral degree from Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Engineering Physics, with solid knowledge on thermodynamics or electrochemistry.

Good proficiency in English orally and in writing is required.
