Postdoctoral Position in Modelling and Optimization of Fluid Bed Combustors Using Machine Learning

A new opening postdoc position in nanotechnology is available at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. This position is available for three years in the first instance. Potential candidates should apply before November 15, 2018.

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is the largest department at Chalmers with research ranging from the most fundamental level to a level close to application in industry and society. The research activities reach from DNA-research and biomaterials to high temperature corrosion, catalysis and recycling. We have approximately 300 employees, divided into four divisions.

The Department of Space, Earth and Environment contains five divisions, with research and education spanning from global challenges related to sustainability and energy supply to astronomy and space sciences. The department is host to two major infrastructures, Onsala Space Observatory and Chalmers Power Central, and consists of about 250 employees.

Both departments are situated at campus Johanneberg in the middle of Gothenburg.

Information about the project

The divisions of Chemical Engineering and Energy Technology offer a joint project related to modelling and optimization of fluidized bed combustors using techniques of machine learning. Research will focus on the 12MWth Chalmers boiler and involves collaboration with various parties, from operators to industrial partners.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibly is to contribute to the success of the described project and merit yourself by producing good quality research reported in scientific journals. In addition, you are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research to relevant stakeholders. You are also expected to take active part in building and maintaining collaborative links with relevant members of the research team in academia and industry. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry and the public sector.

This project represents a new line of research for us, so you and your expertise will be a fundamental component for its success.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).


To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a PhD degree in a relevant field, e.g. Chemical or Process Engineering, Control and Automation, Energy Systems or equivalent; the degree should generally not be older than three years. You have experience with advanced modelling and optimization using machine learning techniques as well as data analysis. You are highly independent and proactive, have good communication and collaboration skills.
