Postdoc Position Chemical Biologist Structure and Function of G-quadruplex Secondary Structures in Dna

University of Cambridge is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a new opening postdoctoral scholar position in molecular biology. The funds for this fellowship are available for 2 years. Applications are invited up to November 05, 2018.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral scientist to work with Professor Sir Shankar Balasubramanian on a Cancer Research UK funded project. The position is available from November 2018 onwards.

Certain G-rich DNA (and RNA) sequences can fold into four-stranded secondary structures called G-quadruplexes. We have been studying the formation of these structures in vitro and in cells to understand their function(s), their roles in mechanisms of importance to cancer and their potential as molecular targets for drugs. We are particularly interested in why G-quadruplexes form and how they affect the processes of transcription, translation. Part of this work will involve the study of protein-G-quadruplex interactions. Our research programme uses a combination of interdisciplinary approaches that include chemical biology, molecular biophysics, structural biology, cell biology and genomics to explore mechanisms involving G-quadruplexes with an emphasis on intervention strategies for cancer [e.g. see Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology,2017, 18, 279; Nature Chemistry,2017, 9, 1110; Nature Genetics, 2016, 48, 1267-1272; Nature,2018, 558, 465-469; Nature Communications,2017,8,14432].

We look to appoint a scientist with experience with an interest in nucleic acids who can develop and apply molecular approaches to elucidate mechanisms. Skills in chemical biology are essential and a knowledge of molecular biology would be beneficial. We value innovation, initiative and independent thinking. We seek individuals with excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Candidates should have (or be about to receive) a PhD in a relevant discipline. See for further information.

Please ensure that you upload a 2-page Curriculum Vitae (CV), a covering letter and publications list in the Upload section of the online application. If you upload any additional documents that have not been requested, we will not be able to consider these as part of your application.
