Postdoc Position at Imperial College London

Imperial College London, UK is offering postdoctoral associate position in molecular biology. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before October 31, 2018.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research Associate to work within the Section of Microbiology, in the MRC Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection based in the Flowers Building at our South Kensington campus.

You will work under the supervision of Dr Vladimir Pelicic (, in close collaboration with Professor Steve Matthews. Dr Pelicic’s group focuses on understanding at a mechanistic level the biology of surface nanomachines that revolve around filaments composed of type IV pilins, generically named type IV filaments (Tff), which are almost universal in prokaryotes.

The post is funded by the MRC to study the earliest step during natural transformation, the widespread biological process in bacteria during which some species use Tff to capture free DNA from their surroundings and incorporate it into their genomes to become genetically altered. This process has implications for human health because it promotes horizontal gene transfer. Our recent work provided a breakthrough by showing that some type IV pilins display intrinsic DNA-binding ability and appear to bind DNA in a radically novel fashion. This work paves the way for the current research programme whose objective is to provide a detailed and holistic understanding of DNA-binding by type IV pilins from various Tff. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Molecular Bacteriology, Biochemistry or Structural Biology and relevant post-doctoral expertise. He/she will have practical experience in molecular biology and/or structural biology study of bacteria and extensive track record of publications in high-quality peer-reviewed scientific journals.
