Postdoc Position at Imperial College London

Imperial College London, UK has an opening postdoctoral scholar position in public health. Applications are welcome before October 28, 2018.

We seek a Research Associate (maternity cover) in The Patient Experience Research Centre (PERC) based in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology in the School of Public Health Imperial College, London.

PERC is a core facility of the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC); a small group of epidemiologists, social scientists and clinical researchers undertaking research on, involvement in and engagement with, translational research. It is led by Professor Helen Ward (epidemiology and public health) and Professor Sophie Day (anthropology) who have developed a strong interdisciplinary collaboration over the past 3 decades with research on HIV/ STI, sex work, breast cancer and health inequalities.

The project 'People Like You', aims to establish the cultural significance of new methods for specifying and portraying people precisely across a range of settings: health care and data science (in the Academic Health Science Centre, Imperial College London) and selected practices in digital culture. We will develop an interdisciplinary figural analysis in collaboration with three creative practitioners (poetry, portraiture and digital media) to put the 'person' back into personalisation and relate people to the data collected from them and on their behalf.

We aim to contribute to critical medical humanities by investigating an emergent culture of personalisation in the UK, associated concepts of the person and health. Stimulating debate on personalised medicine by showing how it can be understood more fully in relation to other personalising practices and how features shared across this broad field are consequential for our wellbeing. Collaboration is critical to our innovative figural approach, which we will apply to case studies of both top-down and open-ended practices of personalisation in medicine, data science and digital culture. With three creative consultants, we will also conduct practice-led research to produce additional insight into the role of participation in, and the sense made of, personalisation.

Candidates will require a PhD or equivalent in a relevant field. You will need knowledge of a range of research techniques in social and data science.

This post is full time and fixed term for 8 months from 01 November 2018 year and will be based at the St Mary's Campus, Paddington. Imperial College is supportive of flexible working. The College is happy to discuss the possibility of implementing such arrangements for this post, with suitably qualified people, subject to operational requirements
