Postdoc on Architectures for In-memory Computations

Eindhoven University of Technology is offering postdoctoral scholar position. Applications should be sumbmitted as soon as possible.

The Electronic Systems Group of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) invites applications for a postdoc position on Architectures for In-Memory Computations.

Job description

The classical Von Neumann computer architectures force data to be moved from a background memory to the processor’s foreground memories before computations can be performed. Modern applications, e.g. from the domain of big data, do not fit well on these architectures. Typically their performance is hampered by the memory bottleneck (due to lack of memory bandwidth, too long memory latencies, little data reuse opportunities, etc.). Near memory computations have been proposed to partially address this bottleneck. The H2020 project MNEMOSENE takes this idea one step further. It will develop and demonstrate a new, ultra-low energy, computation-in-memory (CIM) based architecture, including simulation and compiler tools; so the computation will be as close as possible to the main memory. The postdoc will be involved in the advanced scientific research and teaching responsibilities of the Electronic Systems Group of Eindhoven University of Technology. Within the specific MNEMOSE project, he/she will focus on computation in memory. This includes the development of an innovative multi-tile memristor-based non-Von Neumann architecture, which supports both storage and computation in the same physical location, and the development of a compiler tool flow for this new architecture.

This research will be executed in close collaboration with other universities and research organizations inside and outside The Netherlands. The postdoc will have many opportunities to coach and work with several PhD- and master students. The whole project team includes industrial partners from ARM (UK), IBM (Switzerland), and various leading universities in Europe. This cooperation ensures that the developed concepts are suitable for future real-life applications.

The research will be carried out in the new laboratory of the Electronic Systems Group of Eindhoven University of Technology. The Electronic Systems (ES) group consists of seven full professors, one associate professor, nine assistant professors, several postdocs, about 40 PDEng and PhD candidates and support staff. The ES group is world-renowned for its design automation and embedded systems research. The ideal candidate is pro-active, highly motivated, and independent, and has proven experience with the design of embedded systems. The candidate has also affinity with giving lectures and has good written and oral communication skills in English. We are looking for candidates that match the following profile:
