PhD Studentship Notch Mediated Modulation of The Chromatin Landscape in Senescence and Cancer

The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute (CRUK CI) is a joint venture between the Charity, Cancer Research UK, and the University of Cambridge. Dr Masashi Narita, Head of the Mechanisms of cellular senescence research group, wishes to appoint a student to work on the project entitled: NOTCH mediated modulation of the chromatin landscape in senescence and cancer.

NOTCH signalling has been implicated in embryonic development, cell differentiation and tumorigenesis. Emerging evidence indicates that NOTCH also plays a key role in cellular senescence. Senescence is a persistent form of proliferative arrest, can thus act as an autonomous tumour suppressor mechanism. In addition, senescent cells have a profound modulatory impact on the tissue microenvironment through their non-autonomous activities, best exemplified by the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). We have recently reported that NOTCH signalling is a critical regulator of the SASP (Hoare et al. Nat Cell Biol 2016) and that NOTCH modulates the global chromatin landscape (Nat Commun, Parry et al. 2018). We will further investigate how NOTCH signalling controls chromatin structure and what are the key downstream effectors leading to both the autonomous and non-autonomous activities of senescence. Importantly, NOTCH signalling is often upregulated in cancer, where, we hypothesise, senescence-associated NOTCH effectors can be altered. The project will involve cell biology, genomic (RNA-seq, ChIP-seq), and proteomic approaches as well as close collaboration with computational biologists.

Applicants with experience in cell culture and genomics methods, such as ChIP-seq are particularly encouraged to apply.

This project is funded by a Cancer Research UK studentship that includes full funding for University and College fees and a stipend of 19,000 per annum.

No nationality restrictions apply to Cancer Research UK funded studentships. Applications are invited from recent graduates or final year undergraduates who hold or expect to gain a first/upper second class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject from any recognised university worldwide.
