PhD Scholarship Position in Medical Science Reward-controlling Neurocircuitry

A PhD scholarship in language pathology is available at University of Gothenburg. The funding allows successful candidate to work for 4 years. Potential candidates should apply before November 08, 2018.

The Department of Physiology is part of the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology at Sahlgrenska Academy, the Faculty of Health and Care Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. The Department conducts research within the area of physiology. Several projects involve a close collaboration with the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. We offer undergraduate courses as parts of study programs in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Speech and language pathology, Dental hygiene, Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy and the bachelor program of Cognitive Science. The research groups at the Department represent a broad range of research areas within the field of physiology.

General information about third-cycle studies: The PhD education in Medical Science corresponds to studies of 240 credits in total. The studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. The studies comprisecarrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. For more information about third-cycle studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, see

Project:Our research aim is to understand the brain mechanisms that regulate feeding behavior. We are particularly interested in discovering how these mechanisms contribute to vulnerability to obesity. We are furthermore interested in investigating the neural circuit and molecular basis that control appetite, food reinforcement, and impulsivity related to appetite decisions. The project involves the use of a wide range of methods and technologies from the fields of molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, in vivo two-photon-microscopy, optical calcium imaging, optogenetics and behavioral analysis in rodent models of obesity, addiction, and impulsivity. Work will involve in vivo experiments in rats and mice.

ThePhD studentwill join the section of Metabolic Physiology atSahlgrenska Academy as well as the newly established Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine, which offers access to unique technical platforms as well as competence. Longer research stays in laboratories in the US are expected to be an integral part of this project. The PhD position offers an opportunity to conduct scientific research within a highly motivated, international team and fully equipped laboratories in state-of-the-art facilities, as well ascomprehensive mentoring, opportunities for conference presentations, and further support for career development.

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle studiesif he or she:

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad A person meets thespecific entry requirements for third-cycle studiesif he or she: has successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

– specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields – experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology – scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. Documented experiences inthe field of Neurosciences, Medicine, Biology or related field are meritorious,as well asin Biomedical engineering/Biotechnology with an interest applying their technical aptitude in animal models of disease.Excellent skillsin Swedish andEnglish (oral and written), good communication skills, and very high level of commitment and curiosity about neuroscience questions are desired.

Time limited employment (temporary),4 years.Extent:100%. Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, Department of Physiology. First day of employment: as agreed but preferably January 2019.

Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1998:80.Only those who are admitted to third-cycle studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. They may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration according to the regulations.

The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. The total employment period may not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle studies for four years.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.
