PhD Scholarship Position in Applied Urban Analytics and Informatics

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in sustainable development at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. This position is available for five years. Applications are invited up to November 19, 2018.

We invite applications for a PhD position in Applied Urban Analytics and Informatics at the Division of Urban Design and Planning. The work will involve developing new models, quantitative methods, and tools to support urban design and planning practice towards liveable cities and sustainable urban regions.

- multi-modal mobility network modelling, analysis and visualisation;

- comprehensive city data models for City Information Modelling;

- tackling complex urban problems with spatial decision support systems for the planning process, involving stakeholders.

To pursue these topics we are looking for a highly motivated individual with prior experience of spatial data analysis of urban environments in GIS; data processing, statistical analysis and visualisation; and ideally with some experience of programming in one (or more) of Python, SQL, R, javascript. The work will run under an open science ethos involving the use of and contribution to open data, open software, open standards, and open access. Experience with open source GIS software, geodatabases and/or geoweb development is a plus.

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineeringrepresents a broad field of knowledge theory ranging from engineering science to social science to the humanities and design-based, artistic research. These different perspectives enable strong interdisciplinary development in this field and a broader discussion of different aspects of sustainability. TheDivision of Urban Design and Planningresearches and educates in all scales, from single urban spaces to larger urban landscape and entire regions, with its main focus on the built environment in relation to sustainable development. Architects and planners need to handle these challenges in their daily practice and there is a great need for new knowledge within the field.

- Practice based knowledge and generative methods, focusing on developing sustainable urban design and planning solutions;

- Quantitative, analytical methods, focusing on describing effects of different urban strategies; and

- Critical, interpreting methods, focusing on understanding the built environment in a broader societal context.

The position is funded by the Chalmers Area of Advance Building Futuresand there will be opportunities for collaboration in relevant projects.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibility as a PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. This includes developing scientific concepts and communicating research results both verbally and in writing. In addition to the research project, you will also take advanced courses relevant to the project within Chalmer’s graduate schools or at other Swedish institutions. The position may also include departmental duties, such as teaching, corresponding to about 20 % of working hours.

Full-time temporary employment.The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Urban Studies, Urban Data Science, Geomatics, Geography, or a related field. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English.

You are expected to take initiative, work independently when needed and take responsibility for your work. Finally, you need to be able to disseminate results and knowledge within existing and new networks. This includes academia, industry and society at large.
