PhD Scholarship in Surface Engineering of Titanium for Dental Applications

A fully-funded PhD fellowship in mechanical engineering is available at Technical University of Denmark. This position is available for 3 years. This position is closed on November 08, 2018.

DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, section for Materials and Surface Engineering (MTU) is seeking a qualified PhD candidate for a PhD scholarship in surface engineering of titanium alloys for dental applications. We have state-of-the-art facilities for thermochemical treatments of metallic materials and for materials characterisation. We are part of an industry-driven project on surface engineering of titanium for dental applications and the present PhD project will be closely associated with this project.

The topic of the PhD scholarship will focus on development of new types of surfaces on titanium alloys for use in dental applications. This entails process development, characterisation and optimization of microstructure. There is a particular focus on the use of thermochemical processes to obtain different surface characteristics on titanium alloys. Other surface engineering techniques will also be investigated as part of the project.

Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD project is part of a Danish project that will develop new surfaces on titanium alloys that will be applied to titanium dental parts. There will be close collaboration with other project partners as an integrated part of the PhD.

Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.

You should preferably have experience with thermochemical surface engineering of titanium alloys and microstructure characterisation of metallic materials.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Senior Researcher Morten S. Jellesen and Associate Professor Thomas L. Christiansen.
