PhD Scholarship in Mineral Processing at The University of Queensland

A new opening PhD position in mathematics is available at The University of Queensland, Australia. The initial contract for this position is three years. Candidates are welcome before December 02, 2018.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) is a world-renowned research and postgraduate education organisation, located at Indooroopilly in Brisbane, approximately 7 km from the main University of Queensland campus in St Lucia. JKMRC was established in 1970 and forms part of the UQ Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI).

The mission of the SMI-JKMRC is to deliver world-class, customer-focused education, research and technical services to the world's minerals industry and allied sectors. The SMI-JKMRC has an international reputation for applied research in the areas of mineral processing and geometallurgy. It specialises in ore characterisation, mineral processing unit operations such as comminution and flotation, applied mineralogy, and the interface between mining and processing. SMI-JKMRC's emphasis on systems analysis by mathematical modelling and process simulations has led to major new methodologies in the design and optimisation of mineral processing operations. SMI-JKMRC works closely with the international minerals industry and with other research providers in Australia and overseas. It has graduated in excess of 200 Masters and PhD students and won many awards for its research. It has a proven record of technology transfer through JKTech, which has significant experience in the commercial delivery of SMI-JKMRC research outcomes, particularly in simulation software and ore characterisation methodologies. The successful applicant will be an outstanding and enthusiastic mineral science or engineering graduate in possession of a bachelor's degree with a minimum honours class IIA or equivalent. Please view the minimum level of academic achievement for PhD admission on the UQ Graduate School Research Degree page ( Applicants must have an academic background in a field or discipline relevant to the area of mineral processing and have a proven capability of carrying out practical research. Industrial experience in mineral processing would also be desirable. Applicants should have the ability to work autonomously and show initiative while also building a good rapport with site personnel from a range of disciplines. Strong analytical skills and familiarity with MATLAB, Simulink and Microsoft Excel are also highly desirable.

The SMI-JKMRC is seeking four students to undertake PhD programs sponsored by Newcrest Mining. Newcrest is an Australian based mining company which engages in the exploration, development and mining of copper and gold. They own and run a number of operations both in Australia and around the world, including Cadia Valley Operations (NSW); Telfer Mine (WA); Lihir and Hidden Valley Mines (Papua New Guinea); Bonkiro (Ivory Coast) and Gosowong (Indonesia).

Newcrest has a firm commitment to the development and implementation of ground-breaking new technologies in mineral beneficiation, treatment and separation. The aim is to improve process efficiency whilst reducing environmental impacts. The Newcrest sponsored PhD program focus will be on the development and application of novel comminution, classification, coarse particle flotation and preconcentration technologies. This research is expected to generate outcomes that are directly applicable to current mineral processing practice.

Newcrest is looking for independent, bright and enthusiastic students who are excited at the prospect of conducting ground breaking applied research to overcome the challenges facing the mining industry. Prospective PhD students will be required to conduct experiment-based research projects, both in the laboratory and onsite at Newcrest's operations.

Sponsorship of these PhD programs is also reflective of Newcrest's desire to foster and develop the next generation of technical leaders for the industry.

Applicants must note that applying to this posting does not guarantee admission to UQ in the Higher Degree Research (HDR) program. The applicants who are selected to participate in the Project will be invited to apply to the UQ Graduate School for admission to UQ. Participation in the Project and award of a scholarship is conditional on the applicant receiving an offer of admission from UQ Graduate School. The SMI HDR Office will guide the successful application through the admission application process.

The selected applicants should be prepared to commence PhD candidature in Brisbane, Australia within the first two weeks of Research Quarter 3 (July) 2019.

The current RTP Stipend rate is AUD $27,596 per annum tax-free (2019 rate), indexed annually, for three years with the possibility of two 6-month extensions in approved circumstances.
