PhD Scholarship in Life Cycle Assessment of Waste Management Solutions

The Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Environment) advertises a PhD position within the section of Residual Resource Engineering in the research area described below. The Residual Resource Engineering section has 3 professors and several Associate professors, Senior Researchers, Researchers, Postdocs and PhD-students, in total about 40 people.

Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD position focuses on environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of the waste management system and the associated recovery and conversion technologies. While focus has been primarily on recycling and circular economy within recent years, waste still represents potential pollution that needs careful control and management at societal level. The PhD will focus not only on the household waste, but also on commercial and industrial waste fractions as part of the overall system. Specific attention will be placed on establishing datasets and inventory models representing the range of waste management facilities in Denmark, and model actual waste flows as well as their potential changes over time. The assessment modelling may include economic life cycle costing and be based on the EASETECH model developed at DTU. As part of the PhD, at least three research journal publications will be developed in collaboration with colleagues within the field.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.

The candidate should have prior, documented and hands-on experience with life cycle assessment modelling of waste technologies and systems. Priority will be given candidates which demonstrate up-to-date understanding of waste LCA modelling and documented experience with the EASETECH model. Although not a requirement, Danish speaking skills will be a benefit.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 3 years.
