PhD Scholarship in Economics at Stockholm University

A fully-funded PhD fellowship in development economics is available at Stockholm University. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for four years in Sweden. Applications are invited up to January 31, 2019.

The Department of Economics is one of the biggest departments at the Faculty of Social Sciences with about 100 employees and 1000 students. The teaching focuses on Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics. The main research areas are Labor Economics, Public Economics, Political Economics, and Development Economics.

Qualification requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must either have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test.


The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from doctoral studies. The assessment will among others be based on previous studies and marks in economics. Particularly significance will be given to the quality of thesis work(s). Reference letters and results from GRE and TOEFL may be complementary for the selection.

Terms of study funding

During the first 7 to 10 months, the admitted PhD-student will normally be funded by a tax-free scholarship. After that period of time, we provide taxable scholarships or a time limited university employment. The taxable scholarship and the employment are pensionable and include insurance. The entrance salary is around 19,000 SEK per month net of tax (for all types of funding) and then follows the wage ladder set by negotiations between the employer and the union.

Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but from the second year, they may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
