PhD Scholarship in 3D Print of Plastics From Macromolecules to The Computational Fluid Dynamics

Technical University of Denmark, Denmark is inviting excellent candidates to apply for a PhD position in mechanical engineering. This position is available for 3 years. Applicants should apply before November 18, 2018.

DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, the section for Manufacturing Engineering has a vacant 3-year PhD position in the recently granted project by Danmarks Frie Forskningsfond (DFF) "3D print of plastics: From Macromolecules to the Computational fluid dynamics". The position is to be filled January 1st 2019 or soon after that.

The versatility of 3D printing of (thermo) plastics lies in its potential to produce both functional prototypes and end-use components in standard grade engineering materials. Basically 3D printing is a computer controlled plastic extrusion process. The purpose of this PhD project is computationally to be able to predict the shaping of 3D printed plastic components.

Responsibilities and tasks

The overall tasks in this PhD project are to (1) make a computational model - running on parallel super-computers – of the 3D print nozzle head and (2) be able to predict the measured complex shape of the deposited plastic from a 3D printer nozzle.

You will work with 3D print equipment, using microscopic methods and thermal imaging. You will be responsible for the maintaining and development of our 3D finite element code, dedicated to model flow of plastics. You will work in close collaboration with a group of senior scientists, technicians as well as Post Docs and PhDs. A detailed description of your computer experience and coding skills has to be a part of the application.


Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering. Experience with computational physics using high performance computers is an advantage.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
