PhD Scholarship for Next Generation Ultrahigh Precision Power Amplifiers

The research will be conducted within the Electromechanics and Power Electronics (EPE) group, at the Department of Electrical Engineering in close cooperation with industrial partners.

Research challenge

The accuracy of power amplifiers is one of the key factors determining the positioning accuracy in many high-precision applications. In many industrial applications, the required bandwidth and power output of such motion systems are expected to increase drastically over the coming years. Reaching these goals while adhering to strict accuracy requirements requires the research of new types of DC/AC power converters and their control. Both requirements of a higher power level and bandwidth can be attained by using more complex power electronics configurations. A higher complexity in terms of power converters, unfortunately, usually comes at the cost of more complex control. To push the technology to the edge of what can be achieved, it will be necessary to consider the control of the power converter at the same time as its topology. The research goal of the project is to create power electronic and control structures that together exhibit very predictable behaviour and have a simple transfer function when observed from the motion control perspective, introducing as little disturbance into the motion system as possible. This project provides a very nice balance between fundamental research and practical aspects, making the research quite diverse. The candidate will have to work at a high abstraction level on power converter topologies and their control, in order to achieve the high power, bandwidth and accuracy goals, while the research outcomes will also have to be experimentally validated. Since the Electromechanics and Power Electronics group has a much expertise in high precision power electronics, the candidate will be building on, and extending, knowledge gathered over years of research, making it a very rewarding project.

Electromechanics and Power Electronics group

The EPE group has one of the most advanced electro-mechanic and power electronics laboratories in the Netherlands (680+ m2 floor space) and contains state of the art facilities for testing and validation of electro-mechanic and power electronic systems. There is a strong connection with industry, underlined by the 15 part-time professors from industry. The research that is carried out in the group is challenging, with subjects that include for example ultra-high precision systems, modelling and optimization techniques, advanced scalable power electronics and control, and special rotary machines such as high-speed machines. The capacity group currently consists of 2 full professors, 1 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, 4 postdoctoral researchers, ~20 PhD students, 5 PDEng students and 5 technicians. The PhD student will join the group and collaborate intensely with the other members of the EPE group, where he/she will participate in a mixed academic / industrial research activity. Research within the EPE Group is characterized by a friendly atmosphere and personal supervision. Job requirements

For the PhD position in this project, candidates with an MSc degree in Electrical Engineering will be selected and hired as doctoral student in the Electromechanics and Power Electronics Group ( for a 4-years period. The candidate should have: Excellent knowledge and background in switched-mode power conversion (1-10 kVA), as well as the modelling and control of these power converters Knowledge of and experience in these fields is a big plus: A very strong analytical background, with sound mathematical skills and excellent problem solving abilities Solid practical skills in power converter design and implementation, as well as experimental validation Experience in programming and circuit simulators (Matlab, Simulink, C, Plexim Plecs, LTSpice, PSim, etc.) Strong command of the English language is required (Dutch/German is an advantage) The ability to independently plan, organize, structure and carry out his/her own work with a proactive attitude, to set and work towards goals and to cooperate with others A desire and drive to work on demanding technical problems, and the ability to come up with creative solutions to these problems Good communication skills, both in conversations with colleagues and in presentations to a range of different audiences. The ability to share concepts, ideas and solutions with peers in a clear and concise manner without omitting the essentials Ability and willingness to participate in the educational program offered by the group in the BSc and MSc programs (both taught in English)
