PhD Scholarship Clifford Algebra Methods for Efficient Multidimensional Data Analysis

University of Ghent has an opening PhD position in mathematical analysis. The initial contract for this position is 2 years. Candidates are welcome before November 18, 2018.

We offer a PhD position for an outstanding candidate to develop innovative mathematical and computational tools for efficient multidimensional data analysis. The focus is on exploring geometries of data in high dimensions, using Clifford algebra methods. The topic is motivated by the explosive growth of data volumes and data dimensionality, which call for fundamentally new approaches in data mining. It is generally believed that geometric algebra methods will play an important role in future approaches for data analysis, but the actual mathematical and computational tools are yet to be developed.

In response to these challenges, this PhD aims at establishing both theoretical/mathematical background as well as concrete computational tools for data mining based on Clifford algebra. The candidate is expected to contribute to the development of dictionary learning or neural networks for computer vision using methods of quaternions, octonions or Clifford algebras.

The selected candidate will be a member of the Clifford Research Group at the Department of Mathematical Analysis (EA16) but is expected to interact frequently with the Image Processing and Interpretation group at the Department of Telecommunications and Information Processing (EA07). Supervision will be jointly by Prof. Hendrik De Bie (EA16) and Prof. Aleksandra Pizurica (EA07).

The position is for 2 years.

Starting date is flexible but preferably around January 2019.
