PhD Position in Ultrafast Control of Superconductivity in Spin-ladder Compounds

ETH Zurich, Switzerland is inviting applicants to apply for a PhD position in condensed matter physics. There is no application deadline for this position.

The Ultrafast Dynamics Group (Prof. Steven Johnson) in the Department of Physics of ETH Zrich has an open PhD position as part of a new Ambizione project. PhD position in ultrafast control of superconductivity in spin-ladder compounds

The aim of this project is to investigate the superconducting phase in spin-ladder compounds using ultrafast optical and x-ray techniques. In these materials, superconductivity arises at low temperatures and under pressure. Our goal is to probe and control such a superconducting phase using low frequency THz light pulses, with additional x-ray measurements performed at large scale x-ray facilities. This Ambizione funded project will be based in Prof. Steven Johnson's Ultrafast Dynamics Group at ETH Zrich and developed under Dr. Elsa Abreu's leadership. X-ray measurements will take place at large scale facilities both in Switzerland and abroad.

The ideal candidate holds a Master's degree preferably in physics, alternatively in material sciences. Solid knowledge of condensed matter physics is required, previous experience with ultrafast optical or x-ray experiments is a definite plus. The candidate must demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English and must be enthusiastic, creative and self-motivated. This PhD position is full time, with possible starting dates from January 2019 onwards.
