Nonlinear Wave Propagation and Extreme Events Postgraduate Research Scholarship

A fully-funded PhD fellowship in mechanical engineering is available at The University of Sydney. This position is available for three years. Potential candidates should apply before December 05, 2018.

A unique opportunity is available for an outstanding PhD scholar in the area of nonlinear water waves and hydrodynamic extremes.

Applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission for full-time studies in a PhD within the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney, and be willing to undertake research in the field of nonlinear water waves and hydrodynamics extremes. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Physics with a substantial research component. The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the basis of: feedback from two academic referees, and a personal statement which demonstrates their interest in the field of non-linear water waves and hydrodynamics extremes and knowledge of experimental methods in fluid mechanics, nonlinear water waves, and MATLAB. Applicants with expertise in experimental methods in fluid mechanics, and knowledge of nonlinear water waves and MATLAB will be highly regarded. The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the nomination of the relevant research supervisor in the School of Civil Engineering.

The Scholarship will provide an annual stipend allowance equivalent to the minimum Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend rate for up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance. The recipient may apply for an extension of up to two research periods. Academic course fees and the Student Services Amenities fee are also provided for a successful international applicant, for the same duration as the stipend allowance. Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the Scholarship, will be deducted from the maximum duration of the Scholarship excluding the potential extension period. The Scholarship is for commencement in relevant research period in which it is offered for and cannot be deferred or transferred to another area of research. No other amount is payable. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funding. Progression is subject to passing the annual progress review.
