Full Professor Digital Fabrication for Design at Delft University of Technology

Delft University of Technology is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a new opening professor position in material sciences. This fellowship is last for five years and posible to extend. Applications will be evaluated on a continuous basis.

The faculty of Industrial Design Engineering is the largest and broadest scientific design institute in the world, with over 2,000 students, more than 6,000 alumni and 300 staff (researchers and lecturers, including designers from industrial practice). The faculty aims to contribute to a better living environment and respond to social challenges by combining human values and desires with technological feasibility and economic viability. We are excellently placed to do so, as we ground design methods and skills in scientific knowledge from a wide range of disciplines, leading to concrete solutions.

The faculty of Industrial Design Engineering consists of three departments: Industrial Design Engineering (ID), Design Engineering (DE) and Product Innovation Management (PIM)

The Design Engineering Department is a centre for system-oriented product development and innovation, manufactoring to sustainability. The aim of our work is to empower designers through breakthrough technology innovations and to contribute to the innovative capability and competitiveness of the creative industry sector.

The long-term ambition of the department is to set up design strategies, methods and tools as well as a virtual an digital facilities that allow intelligent creative design solutions to be moved almost seamlessly from imagination to manufacturing, in a sustainable way.

- a future where most products and services will built around machine intelligence and will exhibit reactive or adaptive behaviours

- a future where more and more products and services will be sustainable by design and support a circular product lifecycle

- a future where agile fabrication technologies such as 3D printing, additive manufactoring and robotic manufacturing will be widely used for fabrication of personalised products

As a scientific discipline, Digital Fabrication for Design can be described as the study of new ways of designing that maximize the potential of emerging materials, additive manufacturing processses and digital technologies. Digital fabrication closes the gaps between digital technologies and the physical construction process and is having significant impacts on design.

The new chair in Digital Fabrication for Design will focus on research into digital design and fabrication processes in an industrial product design context, such as additive manufacturing, 3D printing, computerized embroidery, laser cutting e.o. The chair is expected to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to bring together the disciplines of design, integrated manufacturing processes, material science and computer science to deliver theoretical and practical breakthroughts that form the design, engineering and manufacturing of future products.

The scientific Digital Fabrication for Design chair will lead a group with a track record of sucessful research and education and will replace the current chair. The unique technological infrastructure, broad knowledge base, worldwide network and successful alumni of Delft University of Technology gives the new chair an outstanding capacity for exciting and renewed interdisciplinary research, education and valorization activities.
