Communication Strategies for the Internet of Things Postgraduate Research Scholarship

By 2020 there will be 25-50 billion embedded devices around the world, seamlessly monitoring their environments, processing information and communicating wirelessly with other devices. This massive growth in wirelessly connect devices will be driven by the internet of things, the name given to the ubiquitous connectivity of everything everywhere. The internet of things is expected to generate incremental revenue exceeding $300 billion. However, wireless cellular networks must be upgraded to accommodate these new devices.

This Scholarship is to support a potential PhD student to design novel random access strategies and multilevel channel codes to enable new massive multiple access communication strategies for cellular networks.

Applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission for full-time studies in a PhD within the School of Electrical and Information Engineering at the University of Sydney and be willing to undertake research in the field of communication strategies for the internet of things.

Applicants must also hold an Honours degree (First Class or Second Class upper) or a Master’s degree in a related field with a substantial research component, or equivalent.

Applicants must also demonstrate previous research experience in related areas.

The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the basis of:

The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the nomination of the relevant research supervisor(s) in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering.

The Scholarship will provide an annual stipend allowance of $26,300 per annum (fixed rate) for up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance. No extension is possible.

Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the Scholarship, will be deducted from the maximum duration of the Scholarship excluding the potential extension period.

The Scholarship is for commencement in relevant research period in which it is offered for and cannot be deferred or transferred to another area of research.

No other amount is payable. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funding.

Progression is subject to passing the annual progress review.
