Arc Training Centre in Innovative Bioengineering Postgraduate Research Scholarship

Applications are invited for a PhD position to join The University of Sydney. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for three years in Australia. Candidates are welcome before October 31, 2018.

A number opportunities are available for outstanding PhD scholars to work in a multidisciplinary research team in a new Australian Research Council (ARC) Training Centre for Innovative BioEngineering (ARC-TCIB). The ARC-TCIB is a multidisciplinary collaboration among researchers at The University of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney, Swinburne University of Technology, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, in collaboration with leading industry partners including Allegra Orthopaedics, Osseointegration International Pty Ltd, Peter Brehm GmbH, Ti2Medical, and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. The purpose of the ARC-TCIB will be to provide the next generation of skilled graduates with technical, translational, commercialisation, and entrepreneurial skills to overcome industry-focused challenges in biomedical engineering.

Applicants must be a current full time PhD student, or have applied for Admissions for full-time studies in a PhD, in either the School of Information Technologies, Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, or Electrical and Information Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies at the University of Sydney. Applicants must be willing to undertake research in one or more of the advertised projects and have an approved academic supervisor from the University of Sydney. Applicants must also hold an Honours degree (First Class or Second Class upper) or a Master’s degree in an Engineering field with a substantial research component. Applicants may apply for one or more of the eight available projects. Please ensure you read the project description document for additional information. The successful applicants will be awarded the Scholarship on the basis of: feedback from two academic referees, and a personal statement which demonstrates an applicants' interest in the area of research and demonstrated knowledge required for the relevant project. The successful applicants will be awarded the Scholarship on the nomination of the relevant research supervisor(s) and ARC Centre Training Director at the University of Sydney.

The Scholarship will provide an annual stipend allowance of $31,828 per annum (fixed rate) for up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance. The recipient may apply for an extension of up to 6 months subject to funding availability. Academic course fees and the Student Services Amenities Fee (SSAF) may, subject to funding availability, be provided to a successful international applicant only, for up to three years (12 Research Periods), with up to a possible two Research Period extension. Applicants who hold one of the following: Faculty of Engineering and IT Research Scholarship (EITRS) are eligible to apply and may be considered for a supplementary scholarship of up to $10,000 (fixed amount) for the same duration as the primary scholarship. Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the Scholarship, will be deducted from the maximum duration of the Scholarship excluding the potential extension period. The Scholarship is for commencement in relevant research period in which it is offered for and cannot be deferred or transferred to another area of research. No other amount is payable. International recipients will need to pay for their own academic course fees when it is not provide for under this Scholarship. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funding. Progression is subject to passing the annual progress review.
