1 3 PhD Scholarship in Subject Matter Education Swedish and Social Science Subjects

International students are invited for a PhD scholarship in teacher education at University of Gothenburg. The funding allows successful candidate to work for 4 years. Applications should be sent before November 09, 2018.

The Department of Pedagogical, Curricular and Professional Studies offers 1-3 full-time PhD positions in subject matter education with specializations in Swedish and/or the social science subjects (geography, history, religion, civics).

The department has close to 115 employees. The department's overall profile is characterized by an interest in the school and the classroom, and the everyday life of teachers and students in and outside school. Our main area of work concerns teacher education and we conduct education at second- and third-cycle level.

Didactic classroom studies in which teaching, learning and the content of these processes are studied as a coherent whole, paying attention to the specific intentions associated with these activities.

Critical education research, which relates to education as a social and political institution and includes studies of knowledge processes, educational reforms and teaching professions. Interest is directed towards how the educational system deals with issues of education and democracy in connection to social challenges.

Phenomenography, variation theory and learning study focus on opportunities to learn a specific subject content. The research examines what necessary conditions for learning are and how they can be created in e.g. teaching.

This announcement is part of the department's ambition to strengthen these three research environments. The hope is to employ one PhD student per environment in subject matter education with specializations, in this case Swedish and/or the social science subjects. At the department, subject matter education research is carried out, which in Swedish focuses on primary school students' reading and writing development, multimodality and multilingualism; and which in the social science subjects focuses in particular on ethics, sustainability, interculturalism, critical thinking, historical reasoning and social science subjects as social and cultural phenomena.

Subject matter education is a third-cycle subject where the conditions, processes and results of teaching, learning and education are studied in relation to specific content. The relationships and links between learning and teaching are of particular interest, as is how we organize, discuss and act in relation to such specific content. Research into subject matter education often involves classroom studies, but may also embrace structural perspectives, e.g. by studying education systems, curricula and syllabuses.

The position will be linked to the department's research environments as described above

The PhD student will be engaged in doctoral studies. In addition to this, the applicant may be required to fulfil duties relating to education, research and administrative work in accordance with special provisions of the regulations in the Higher Education Ordinance (max 20%). The employment is then extended by the corresponding amount of time.

Those who are admitted to postgraduate education are granted a four-year doctoral position at the department. The requirements for admission are that the applicant meets the general and specific entry requirements and is considered in other respects to have the ability required to complete the doctoral studies.

General entry requirements

According to Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a person meets the general entry requirements if he or she has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 higher education credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle.

Specific entry requirements

A. Teaching qualification, including courses corresponding to at least 30 higher education credits awarded in the second-cycle in a relevant subject, and an independent project (degree project) comprising at least 15 higher education credits awarded in the second-cycle.

B. At least 90 higher education credits, of which at least 30 are higher education credits awarded in the second-cycle, within a relevant area of knowledge within subject matter education, and an independent project (degree project) comprising at least 15 higher education credits awarded in the second-cycle.

Eligible applicants also include those who have acquired substantively equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

Selection of applicants who meet the eligibility requirements shall be in accordance with Chapter 7 of the Higher Education Ordinance made with regard to the ability of the applicants to complete the doctoral studies.

A great deal of importance is also attached to whether the applicant's thesis work can be supported by and contribute to one of the three research environments at the department.

Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1998:80.Only those who are admitted to third-cycle studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. They may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration according to the regulations.

The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. The total employment period may not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle studies for four years.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.

Decisions on admission are taken by the head of department. In accordance with the doctoral study regulations at the University of Gothenburg, only doctoral students who can be offered supervision are admitted to postgraduate education.

It should also explain how the research area relates to at least one of the department's three research environments. In addition, the project’s relation to Swedish and/or social science subject matter education (either thematic or specifically focused on geography, history, religion or social science) is clarified.
