Uts PhD Scholarships in Media Transition at University of Technology Sydney

Applications are invited for a PhD position in social sciences to join University of Technology Sydney, Australia. Candiates are welcome before September 30, 2018.

UTS is offering scholarships to research the effects and implications of disruption and transition in the media sector. Students will work with the new Centre for Media Transition, an interdisciplinary unit established by UTS in July 2017 to explore and develop responses to the dramatic and ongoing movements wrought by digital disruption to the media industry.

The scholarships are being offered as a joint initiative of the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, and the Connected Intelligence Centre. Candidates will be enrolled through one of the faculties but will work on an interdisciplinary project. Examples of topics that might be pursued by the Centre and which would suit doctoral research are:

Ways of building trust in media sources, including the role of computation in countering misinformation

The application of data science to social media/web analytics (e.g. for sentiment, argumentation or social network analysis) to provide novel insights for business, education and beyond

How communications regulation might evolve with changes in media production, distribution and consumption
