Research Associate/Assistant (Fixed Term)

This position is for a Research Associate/Assistant to work in Professor Judith Driscoll’s research group: https://driscoll.msm.cam.ac.uk/

The project is funded by the Office of Naval Research. It aims to use a metamaterials approach for enhancing the superconductive transition temperature, Tc, of high temperature superconductors. The project will be a collaboration between the University of Cambridge, where the researcher will synthesize novel epitaxial nanocomposite thin film systems and the Naval research lab in Washington DC, where superconducting measurements will be undertaken. Optical properties of the samples will be made at Towson University and the modelling will be undertaken at the University of Maryland.

The successful applicant will be required to undertake superconductor thin film growth by pulsed laser deposition as well as extensive materials by x-ray diffraction and basic superconducting measurements. The position is available for a relatively junior postdoc and should start between 1st November 2018 and 1 January 2019.

Candidates should have a PhD, or about to be awarded a PhD, and a strong background in applied physics/materials science or closely related subject, preferably with knowledge of oxide thin film growth, superconductivity, and physical property measurements. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required to conduct with international project between 4 different partners.
