Research Associate in Mechanisms of Oil Wetting of Carbonates at the Nanoscale (Fixed Term)

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoc position at University Of Cambridge. All students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply. Applicants should apply before September 24, 2018.

A position exists, for a Research Associate in the Nanoscience Centre at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, to carry out work on BP-ICAM-funded research on understanding the molecular interactions between oil and carbonate/limestone rocks from oil wells. Oil wets these surfaces more than expected given their mineralogy. Using a combination of AFM, nanomechanical property mapping, surface potential mapping, chemical force microscopy, SEM, EDX, FT-IR and AFM-IR, we will unravel the nature of the interactions between the oil molecules and the surfaces of interest.

The post holder will be located in the Nanoscience Centre in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are to carry out the contracted research, to help write reports on this research, to liaise with BP staff and to assist in the running of Dr Durkan’s research group.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are: has obtained a PhD in Physics, Chemistry or a related subject. Knowledge of surface chemistry and interactions between molecular species and surfaces is essential, as is practical experience with AFM. Experience of using the other techniques named above is desirable. Must be a good communicator and be flexible in working with others. Previous experience of engaging with industry would be beneficial. Experience of leading research as a postdoctoral researcher is also preferable.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
