Research Associate at University of Cambridge

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoc position in social sciences at University of Cambridge. Citizens of any country are eligible to apply. Applicants should apply before October 03, 2018.

CRASSH is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and independent Research Associate to join the four-year project Expertise Under Pressure, led by Dr Anna Alexandrova.

The project explores the role of experts in understanding and effecting social change, with a focus on experts from the social sciences. Our innovative case study on the authority of social expertise will focus on the authority of knowledge and social change currently being produced by economists, sociologists and anthropologists as compared to natural scientists. We aim to map out the scepticism that social scientific expertise has faced historically and continues to face, and to formulate a broad defence of social expertise along with principles for its legitimacy.

The Research Associate will work with Dr Alexandrova to develop this case study as well as conduct their own research for publication in leading philosophy and social science journals. In addition, they will be involved in organising and participating in work-in-progress meetings and events, and editing project outputs.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD, in a relevant subject area, awarded by the start date of this position. He/she will have expertise in a relevant social science discipline (see ‘Further Information’ for details), and be expected to provide evidence of the ability to organise and participate in collaborative research initiatives, and in presenting research findings to a scholarly audience. The position will be based at CRASSH in Cambridge but the Research Associate will be expected to travel to Europe/the US, as required.

Fixed-term: The start date is 1 January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter (in exceptional circumstances this can be delayed until 1 March 2019). Funding for the position is available until 30 September 2022, in the first instance.

The closing date for applications is 3 October 2018. Interviews are planned on for the week beginning 5 November 2018. If you have any questions about this vacancy or the application process, please contact
