Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate in the Control and Power Research Group in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering working with Prof Strbac Goran and Dr Paola Falugi. With the security of supply in the integrated energy systems moving from redundancy in assets to intelligent control, it becomes necessary to adequately quantify the risks associated with the paradigm shift towards non-traditional technologies and solutions such as Demand Side Response, energy storage etc., for tackling electrical network problems (e.g., voltage control and smart protection and control) as well as a range of new smart network technologies (e.g. hydrogen, cold and heat storage and novel conversion technologies between vectors) for creating new flexibility resources.

You will investigate novel methodologies and models for quantifying and optimising security of supply performance of future low carbon energy systems as well as alternative parameterisation approaches to efficiently quantify infrastructure security and risk profiles of emerging technologies with an appropriate level of accuracy. Another area of investigation is advanced stochastic. Your duties will also involve supervision of PhD students working in similar area and participate in relevant research projects of the Control and Power group.

The successful candidate should have a PhD or equivalent in Energy Systems Optimisation, Operational Research, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related subject. Applicants are expected to have working experience with different programming languages and optimisation software tools, as well as good communication and technical writing skills. Priority will be given to applicants with strong knowledge in modelling of reliability of electricity grids, optimisation techniques for modelling uncertainties, advanced energy system modelling and/or stochastic /robust optimisation methodologies.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range 33,380 - 35,061 per annum.
