Research Assistant/Associate: Lab Manager (Fixed Term)

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, motivated individual to take the position of Laboratory Manager for Dr Bndicte Sanson’s research group in the department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge, funded by a Wellcome Trust Investigator Award.

Our group investigates the mechanisms underlying embryo morphogenesis, using the Drosophila model. We aim to understand the genetic and physical factors shaping epithelial tissues, a goal relevant to the understanding of many human diseases. We focus on conserved morphogenetic events, such as tissue extension and boundary formation, and employ a range of approaches to elucidate morphogenetic mechanisms, including Drosophila genetics, confocal imaging of live embryos, image analysis, computational analysis of cell and tissue behaviours and mathematical modelling (

The post will have both a research and administrative component. The latter will involve supporting the PI in the smooth operation of the laboratory. This will include procuring laboratory equipment and consumables, maintaining and managing equipment and Health and Safety responsibilities. On the research side, the Lab Manager will assist in the development and completion of projects, including setting up new techniques and providing specialist technical support to researchers and students. This will also involve helping to prepare scientific papers and grant applications.

Candidates must have a BSc or PhD in a relevant biological subject (PhD is required for appointment to Research Associate, grade 7 level). We are looking for a talented researcher who wishes to take on a combined research/managerial role and to establish themselves as a key collaborator for the group (see the following Nature Careers blog for more information about Lab Manager roles: doi:10.1038/nj7505-433a). Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently are essential. Previous experience in working with the Drosophila model would be desirable.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
