Postdoc Position at Imperial College London

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Research Associate to carry out research in the area of Methane pyrolysis in collaboration with ExxonMobil, the sponsor of the programme.

The successful candidate will build a pressurised pyrolysis reactor and investigate the pyrolysis of Methane using molten salt as the heat transfer/catalytic medium. The candidate will evaluate various media to increase the performance of the system. In that context (s)he will also investigate the carbon formation process. Own data will be used to propose reaction mechanisms and in a systems context build an ASPEN model to evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of the process.

Consequently, the post holder is cognate of both, experimental and modelling practice. (S)he will be able to work across several disciplines, combining experimental and theoretical work, and have a strong background in high temperature processing operations. The post holder should exhibit a high degree of flexibility, self-motivation and ability to acquire new knowledge.

As well as conducting his/her own research, the post holder will work with a small team and is expected to provide technical and practical guidance and support similar projects. (S)he will be responsible for managing a laboratory and implementing and maintaining safe working practices. The post holder will require excellent communication and writing skills, to present research findings to the sponsor, at project meetings, conferences and to the wider public and disseminate project reports and research publications.

Candidates should hold a UG degree and PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline with particular emphasis on high temperature gas processing.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range 33,380 - 35,061 per annum.

This full time position is offered on a fixed-term basis up to 30 September 2019 with the possibility for further extension, and will be based in the Department of Chemical Engineering on the South Kensington Campus in London.
