PhD studentship in NanoPhotonics - Optical Nanocavities for Memory Devices

Applications are invited for a PhD position in nanoscale device engineering and plasmon-enhanced light-matter interactions for optically accessible resistive switches, starting in January 2019.

The successful candidate will join the Di Martino Lab as part of the Nanophotonics Centre, University of Cambridge, which is a world leading academic group in the field of nanoscience.

One of the most promising contenders for ultralow-energy electronic devices is resistive switching memory (RRAM) which delivers sustainably-scalable ‘neuromorphic’ computing, potentially capable of reducing energy consumption in IT by >50%. Understanding the nanoscale kinetics of the switching mechanisms is needed to enable high-endurance devices – only this can unlock their integration into fast, low-energy, logic-in-memory architectures. Using the ultra-concentration of light we recently achieved, this project will develop innovative fast ways to study real-time movement of individual atoms that underpins this new generation of ultra-low energy memory nano-devices, thus overcoming the limitations of traditional investigation techniques and opening up new routes to sustainable future IT.

Our group has recently succeeded in linking the fields of nanoscale device engineering and plasmon-enhanced light-matter interactions by implementing optically accessible resistive switches. We have strong collaborative linkages with the Department of Engineering and Material Science in Cambridge.

We are looking for a highly motivated, bright and enthusiastic candidate to join our group to explore and characterise the limits of this new process. The project will involve a combination of physical experiments, equipment modification, optical and electrical characterization, numerical simulation, and analytical description. The successful candidate should have a first class or equivalent degree, as well as a Masters in a relevant area of engineering from a leading university and ideally will have some work experience.

This studentship will pay full University fees and a maintenance allowance for UK and EU students. Stipends will be paid at the standard RCUK rate of 14,777 p/a.
