PhD Studentship: Adsorption on Surfaces

A phd position is available at University Of Cambridge. This fellowship is available for all students around the world. Applicants should apply before September 30, 2018.

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship starting in January or April 2019 to work with Professor Stuart Clarke on a project which aims to understand the adsorption of inorganic and organic species to a surface, or carbonates from liquids at ambient conditions and at elevated temperature. These issues are relevant for a number of important areas such as enhanced oil recovery, overbase agents in oils, and sea creatures near thermal vents. We propose to consider a range of laboratory-based methods, as well as work at some of the world’s leading neutron and synchrotron scattering facilities, to identify the composition and structure of the adsorbed layer.

The studentship is a 3-year EPSRC Industrial CASE award, co-funded by BP plc. The student will spend some time working within the company during their PhD.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) the equivalent of a UK first class or upper second class honours degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in chemistry, materials science, or other relevant discipline. Experience and knowledge of surface chemistry would be particularly advantageous.

The studentship will provide a maintenance grant and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, and is available to UK and EU students who meet the UK residency requirements of the Research Councils. Students from EU countries who do not meet the residency requirements may be eligible for a fees-only award. Owing to funding restrictions imposed by the sponsor, non-EU citizens cannot be considered.

Applications should include a cover letter, CV, detailed academic transcripts and the contact details for at least two academic referees, and should be sent by email to Professor Stuart Clarke (, to whom any informal enquiries can be addressed.
