PhD Student Position in Phase-sensitive Optical Amplifiers and Their Applications

The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academia, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and PhD students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with the latest equipment.

Information about the research/the project/the division

The Photonics laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, with about 30 members, is involved with research on optical communication systems, optical amplifiers, and optoelectronics. We have a state-of-the experimental facility for optical communication and excellent funding over the next several years. Our research is both experimental and numerical and we have extensive international collaboration. We also have access to a state-of-the-art clean room for fabrication of optical structures and devices as well as experience in commercializing our research.

In the area of communication we implement new modulation formats to achieve higher spectral efficiency in optical communication channels, thereby increasing capacity. Ultralow noise optical amplifiers are investigated as they allow a significant increase of throughput in long-haul transmission. The more device-oriented research deals with lasers satisfying requirements for optical interconnects in terms of speed and power consumption. This research project deals with phase-sensitive optical parametric amplifiers (PSA) that have unique and superior properties compared with all other optical amplifiers, most notably the potential of noiseless amplification, very broad optical bandwidth, and being an enabler of a range of ultrafast all-optical functionalities. While these amplifiers have great promise for use in optical transmission, there exist many other very exciting applications as well ranging from spectroscopy, sensing, to deep-space communication.

Topics include:
- Compact and high-performance nonlinear platforms for PSAs and other applications.
- Devices enabled by PSAs including ultralow noise lasers and broadband amplifiers.
- New optical amplification approaches for spatial-division-multiplexed transmission systems.
- Few-photon nonlinear optics and quantum communications.

The objective is to unleash the unexplored potential of PSAs by generating knowledge and implementing experimental demonstrations that go substantially beyond current state-of-the-art. This involves a mix of engineering and scientific challenges with telecom and non-telecom applications in mind.

We are now seeking an innovative self-motivated person that will be able work independently as well as in larger teams. Fluency in English is a requirement. The person filling this position will participate in research on phase-sensitive parametric amplifiers and conduct experiments, supporting them with numerical simulations, on various PSAs with different applications in mind.

This research is funded by the Swedish Research Council in a long-term (10 years) project.

Major responsibilities

The person filling this position will participate in research as outlined above and will be conducting mainly experimental work and supporting it with numerical simulation work. The appointment offers an opportunity to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry. Included in the work is also to some extent taking part in the supervision and teaching of undergraduate students as well as departmental duites.

The position as a PhD student is a full-time temporary employment, limited to a maximum of four years, plus teaching and other departmental duties. A monthly salary is paid. There are no tuition fees for PhD studies at Chalmers.

Qualifications

Applicant should have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or similar, with a strong background in optical communications. Excellent team-working skills, presentation skills, and fluency in English are required. As important merits will be considered knowledge in nonlinear optics and experience with optical tranmission experiments, Matlab and other simulation software, teaching experience, and publications.
