PhD Student Position in integrated Silicon Photonics

The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academia, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and PhD students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with the latest equipment.

Information about the research/the project/the division

The Photonics laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, with about 30 members, is involved with research on optical communication systems, optical amplifiers, and optoelectronics. We have a state-of-the experimental facility for optical communication and excellent funding over the next several years. Our research is both experimental and numerical and we have extensive international collaboration. We also have access to a state-of-the-art clean room for fabrication of optical structures and devices as well as experience in commercializing our research.

In the area of communication we implement new modulation formats to achieve higher spectral efficiency in optical communication channels, thereby increasing capacity. Ultralow noise optical amplifiers are investigated as they allow a significant increase of throughput in long-haul transmission. The more device-oriented research deals with lasers satisfying requirements for optical interconnects in terms of speed and power consumption. This research project deals with the integration of optical functions in a compact format is essential in future optical systems in order to reduce cost and footprint while at the same time increase performance and scalability to large volumes. In this project, we are developing the silicon integration technology for transmitters in both short- and longer reach optical interconnects (to be used e.g. in data centers or supercomuters) using multi-wavelengths transmitters based on VCSELs and nonlinear ring resonators. Some components will be fabricated in our in-house clean room and others will be designed and outsourced to an outside foundry. The research will deal with the performance characterization of components, sub-systems, and full system experiments.

We are now seeking an innovative self-motivated person that will be able work independently as well as in larger teams.

The project is funded by the Swedish research council (VR) and is a collaboration with Technical University of Denmark.

Major responsibilities

The person filling this position will participate in research as outlined above and will be conducting mainly experimental work and supporting it with numerical simulation work. The work includes the analysis and characterisation of devices, concepts, sub-systems, and full systems for mid-reach optical interconnects. The appointment offers an opportunity to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry. Included in the work is also to some extent taking part in the supervision and teaching of undergraduate students as well as departmental duites.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications

Applicant should have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or similar, with a strong background in optical communications or optoelectronics. Excellent team-working skills, presentation skills, and fluency in English are required. As important merits will be considered knowledge of optical devices and their fabrication and experience with optical tranmission experiments. Matlab and other simulation software, teaching experience, and publications.
