PhD Scholarship in Sound Field Analysis and Microphone Array Processing in Rooms

The Acoustic Technology group at DTU Electrical Engineering conducts research in experimental methods in acoustics, sound fields, architectural acoustics, signal processing, transduction, vibration and numerical methods. As a part of a new research project granted to Efren Fernandez Grande by the VILLUM foundation, we will initiate several projects on sound field analysis, measurement and reproduction. The research project is titled "large-scale acoustic holography", and it aims at developing an experimental framework to capture the full three-dimensional acoustic field inside a room or enclosure.

The objective of the PhD project is to develop experimental methods to characterize the spatio-temporal properties of the sound field in a room, based on measurements with microphone arrays and distributed sensor networks. A central element of the project is to develop signal reconstruction methods that exploit the physical structure of the sound field, to achieve a faithful representation. The ultimate goal is to characterize, capture and reproduce the sound field of complex rooms such as auditoria, theaters or concert-halls. This work has applications on communications, architecture, virtual reality, heritage preservation and the arts.
- Develop a wave model of the sound field in a room, based on spatio-temporal (or spatio-spectral) data acquired with a network of sensors distributed throughout the room.
- Investigate the use of arrays of acoustic transducers to capture and analyse the spatial properties of the sound fields in a room or enclosure. Examine the use of wave expansions to model the measured acoustic data, and assess their accuracy, validity and robustness to perturbations.
- Examine the use of signal reconstruction methods that exploit the physical structure of the sound field in a room, and which can potentially lead to accurate representations of the acoustic field over large regions of space.
- Participate in international scientific conferences, and visit other leading research groups abroad.
- Participate in regular meetings with the other team members, discuss and engage in the work conducted by the team.
- Be a part of a creative and stimulating scientific environment
- Interact with experts in topics related to your project
- Participate in teaching and supervision of students
- Travel and visit other internationally leading research centres in acoustics
- Having good communication skills is a valuable asset for the position.
