PhD on Snow and ice parameter estimation using high frequency multi-modal SAR

The research focuses on the retrieval of snow and ice parameters and their dynamics from multi-modal SAR observations. Radar interferometry will be used to generate time series of digital elevation models. The temporal analyses of digital elevation models provides snow or ice surface elevations, which are one surface condition for modelling glacier dynamics. It is the aim of this research study to combine remote sensing observations and physical glacier models. Resulting advantages and disadvantages are elaborated. Radar data is provided by airborne multi-parametric SAR and spaceborne SAR systems at higher temporal revisit time. Several snow and glacier test sites worldwide are available, which can provide valuable ground validation measurements. The research topic is evaluated in the frame of new upcoming mission proposals and existing missions and involves a multi-disciplinary and international team.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate holding a master's degree or a diploma in electrical engineering, geomatics engineering, geophysics, computational science, mathematics, physics or a related field. The successful candidate has strong analytical skills and programming experience in Matlab, Python, C/C++, or equivalent. Prior experience in snow/ice modelling, field work and in working with large data sets will be advantageous for the project. Fluency in English is required (oral and written), and it is essential that the candidate is willing to work in a multidisciplinary and international research team. Applicants should hold a valid driver's license (European Cat. B).
