Clinical Senior Research Associate (Honorary Consultant) (Part Time, Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a part-time (0.8FTE) Clinical Senior Research Associate (Honorary Consultant) position based in the Cambridge Breast Cancer Research Unit (CBCRU). The CBCRU is a purpose built research facility attached to the Cambridge Breast Unit. It is involved in cutting edge clinical and laboratory research into breast cancer and is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team, including oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, nurses, research assistants, data management and laboratory staff involved in translational research. The CBCRU is led by the Director, Professor Carlos Caldas and managed by the Deputy Director and a steering committee who direct CBCRU operations.

We are seeking candidates with interest and expertise in the use and analysis of blood-based biomarkers in breast cancer patients. The successful candidate will lead on the continued use and advancement of liquid biopsies to refine and enhance patient treatment. This will involve development and management of lab-based techniques to further improve the detection of circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA), and other biomarkers, in liquid biopsies. The role-holder will be expected to utilise the assays that they develop in the design and implementation of new liquid biopsy-based trials, with the ultimate aim of bringing this into real-time use in clinics. The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in recruitment of breast cancer patients into clinical trials within the Breast Cancer Research Programme (both liquid biopsy-based and others), and be a co-principal investigator for oncogenetic research studies.

The successful candidate will also perform some clinical duties at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge University Hospitals Trust.

Applicants should be medically qualified, have, or be eligible for, full GMC registration, have a PhD and be fully trained in medical oncology (specialising in breast cancer). Applicants should have expertise in both early and metastatic breast cancer, and must be able to play a key role in Oncogenetics Review Board multidisciplinary team meetings. Furthermore, the role-holder will be expected to provide ward cover for breast oncology inpatients, and participate in the on-call rota. This appointment requires an NHS Honorary Consultant Contract.

Appointment to Clinical Senior Research Associate is subject to approval by the Faculty board of Clinical Medicine.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment. This appointment also requires an Honorary Clinical Contract.
