Artistic Professor in Healthcare Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering has about 290 employees encompassing a broad theoretical knowledge base, from engineering science to the social sciences to the humanities, as well as design-based, artistic research. Information on the research area

Research and education in Architecture at Chalmers has a strong profile in sustainability, working with central societal challenges in the built environment with explorative and practice-based approaches. The department's teaching and research in architecture, urbanism and design processes integrate practice-based, artistic and scientific methods to explore the broad aspects of architecture - from building technology, physical design, and spatial structures to design methods, transformation of built environments and its role in sustainable development. Our goal is to develop architecture and built environments with high artistic and scientific quality.

The division of Building Design conducts research and education in the field of planning and design of buildings with a strong position within housing and care, but also sustainable renovation and transformation of buildings. The division focuses on all aspects of architectural design starting with users' needs, over program and design stages for use and experience of the built environment.

Healthcare and architectural design is an important task for architects, which is reflected in the fact that the subject has taken a prominent place in both education and research at Chalmers. The employment is located at the division of Building design who is hosting the Center for Healthcare Architecture, a national platform for knowledge sharing, discussions, development work and research on the subject. The platform aims at increased collaboration between business and academia. The center is well established with regular activities, including for example thematic day-events and commissioned research where the applicant is expected to contribute actively.

Job description

The purpose of the position is to continue the successful education in healthcare architecture. The research and education environment shall conduct research and education in advance of the current knowledge front.

As an artistic professor, you are expected to have a leading role in teaching in your subject area. The assignment include teaching at master's and postgraduate level. Other important parts of the service are to inform and communicate about education and ongoing development in the subject area, as well as to collaborate within both academia and other communities, for example by participating in the Center for Healthcare Architecture (CVA), primarily with the task of managing CVA.

The assignment as director of CVA includes task such as : conducting research in close collaboration with the profession/industry, collect knowledge of healthcare building. In relation to the amount of research done in healthcare, the healthcare building research is extremely modest. In order to gain an understanding of the importance of care facilities and the opportunities they have for developing and support healthcare, evidence is required - which is what the research aims at. The assignment as a director is responsible ensuring the activity plan and responsibility for management and organization. The director reports to head of department and the steering committee at CVA.

The position is funded to 75% by the County Council and Regions, through Forum Vrdbyggnad and Region Vstra Gtaland and Swedish Association of Local Authorities and regions.

The position as Artistic Professor is a limited-term part-time employment of 80% lasting 6 years (3+3).

Qualifications

The successful candidate for this position has experience of teaching or comparable activities and appreciate the creative work in teams. You are used to communicate with society outside the research community and have experience of architectural business. Good communicative skills in especially Scandinavian languages is, if not a requirement, meritorious.

The employment requires good industry knowledge as well as broad network of contacts in healthcare in a Swedish context. You have good leadership skills and good ability to interact. Meriting is a strong national (and international) network among practitioners in the field.
