1 Open PhD Position in Structural Engineering at EPFL

EPFL is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a PhD position. All students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply. Applicants should apply as soon as possible.

When simulating the seismic response of buildings, a large suite of analyses is required to account for various sources of uncertainties related to the ground motion excitation or the building properties. As a result, research and engineering practice requires efficient numerical simulation tools when predicting the performance of buildings during earthquakes. The project addresses stone masonry buildings, which are the most vulnerable buildings under earthquake loading. Such buildings can fail due to in-plane or out-of-plane failure modes.

For a research project on the modelling of stone masonry structures by means of efficient numerical models, se offer a PhD position. The objective of this research project is to investigate the in-plane response of spandrels and panels between openings and to explore whether the out-of-plane response can be approximated by simple nonlinear beam element models. A small part of the research will comprise large-scale experimental plane response can be approximated by simple nonlinear beam element models. A small part of the research will comprise large-scale experimental testing; the main part of the work will involve the development and validation of new numerical models for the modelling of stone masonry structures.
