PhD Scholarship in Neuroscience at Newcastle University

Newcastle University is seeking a highly motivated PhD student with an interest in neuroscience. To be eligible, candidates must hold European citizenship. The deadline for applying is July 10, 2015.

- Interested in the application of mathematics or computer science to animal behaviour or welfare? This PhD project will explore which patterns in behaviour or facial behaviour can be used to classify the welfare state of an animal using mathematical or computational approaches.
- Using existing video footage and specially designed experiments, we will measure the movements of the body and faces of an animal in response to positive and negative stimuli. Seeking to understand the pattern of these movements in time and space we will create a series of templates for different behavioural reactions.

We predict that these archetypal templates will be able to distinguish between different welfare states. The study will be focused on, but may not be limited to, the domestic dog.
Application Requirements
- You must have, or expect to achieve, a minimum of an upper second class Honours degrees or international equivalent, in a subject related to behavioural sciences, mathematics or computer science. If your degree is in behavioural sciences you must demonstrate an interest in computer science or mathematics. If your degree is in mathematics or computer science, you must demonstrate an interest in animal behaviour or welfare.
