PhD Studentship in Chemistry

A PhD scholarship is available in chemistry at Technical University of Denmark. The duration of this scholarship is 3 years. Citizens of any country are eligible to apply. Applicants should apply before April 01, 2015.

The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark seeks a PhD student to work on the PhD project: Understanding Sulphuric Acid Accumulation in Lube Oil in Diesel Engines.

The purpose is to develop an understanding of sulphuric acid droplet formation in the lube oil at the cast iron cylinder wall as a function of fuel S, cylinder temperature and pressure, water content of combustion air, limestone and surfactant content of the lube oil, and other relevant parameters. The investigation (model) can include rate-influencing phenomena such as gas phase composition and pressure cycles (at about 2000°C), gas phase oxidation of SO2 to SO3, condensation of water and sulphuric acid droplets on the lube oil film surface, diffusion of surfactants, transport of H + from droplets to limestone surfaces, and transport of acidic droplets to the cast iron cylinder wall.

- Literature study on diesel engines and the chemistry of a selected running diesel engine.
- Collection and analysis of spent lube oil from selected full-scale diesel engines.
- Exchange and use of data from the other subprojects (in particular the lube oil test rig).
- Mapping and quantification of acid generation, transport, and neutralization mechanisms in a running diesel engine.
- Mathematical modelling of sulphuric acid accumulation in lube oil in diesel engines.
- Experiments in chemical reactors with lube oil and sulphuric acid.
- Recommendations for practical use of the results

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.

The period of employment is 3 years.
