Doctoral Position in Theoretical Physics

Umeå University is offering PhD scholarship in physics. The duration of this scholarship is 4 years. All students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply. Applications are invited up to April 30, 2015.

A combustion front propagates either as a slow subsonic flame or fast supersonic detonation; their velocities differ by 3-4 orders of magnitude. However, at certain conditions a slow flame may spontaneously accelerate and trigger detonation. Such transition is one of the most important and the least understood phenomena in combustion science and hydrodynamics. Transition from flame to detonation is the key point, for example, for explaining Thermonuclear Supernovae and developing advanced technologies of energy production, such as new-generation engines for hypersonic aircrafts. In this project we will develop theoretical models and perform numerical simulations of flame acceleration and detonation triggering.
This is a full time position extending for four years. Opportunities for part-time teaching (max 20%) may be offered. If so, the total time for the position will be increased accordingly. The position is planned to be filled in September 2015.

- We are looking for a person interested in theoretical physics with good skills in numerical methods.
- Previous experience of working in combustion, hydrodynamics, or nonlinear physics is desirable, though not mandatory for an applicant.
- Good communication skills in written and spoken English are required.
