Doctoral Position in Experimental Systems Biology

Norwegian University of Life Sciences is seeking a highly motivated PhD student with an interest in life sciences. Citizens of any country are eligible to apply. The deadline for applying is April 15, 2015.

The Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences (IHA), Centre for Integrative Genetics (CIGENE, is inviting applications for a 3-year PhD position in the cross-section between systems biology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics. The successful candidate will work within the CIGENE environment, which includes comprehensive molecular lab facilities and a strong environment dedicated to bioinformatics, and mathematical modeling. The PhD candidate will work on the GenoSysFat project. More info at: GenoSysFat will utilize culture of precision-cut liver slices and material from live fish experiments to characterize and understand omega-3 synthesis and metabolism in Atlantic salmon. The PhD candidate will experimentally induce changes in the fatty acid syntheses pathway in salmon to generate large datasets of metabolic responses (transcriptomics, proteomics, and lipid measurements). These data will then be used to build systems biology models of fatty acid metabolism. The project is highly multidisciplinary and the candidate will therefore have to collaborate closely with other PhD-candidates and researchers in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and mathematics. The specifics of the PhD project will be defined in dialogue with, and be dependent on, the successful candidate's academic background and skill set.
The starting salary for PhD fellowships is wage grade 50 (equivalent to annual salary 429 700 NOK) on the Norwegian Government salary scale. Salary increases follow standard meriting regulations.
